Answer

Ignaz Semmelweis is a Hungarian physician who proved that hand-washing could reduce the number of women dying giving birth to a child. In the late 1800s, surgeons did not scrub up or wash hands before and in-between surgery, resulting in transfer of infections between patients. Semmelweis proved that childbed fever can be reduced through rigorous hand washing, and he also introduced the hand washing rules in maternity ward. With his work, death of mothers was reduced.
