Genital herpes, a sexually transmitted infection is usually caused by a microbe called human herpesvirus 2 or herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). Human herpesvirus 1 or herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) can also cause genital herpes.

Herpes infections caused by HSV-1 is on the rise in recent times. This virus usually infects a person if he/she is indulging in oral sex. The infection usually is in the mouth area but genital herpes is also possible. Newborns can also be infected by the virus if they are birthed through the vagina.
