Chapter 2 - Figure 2.11 - Cholesterol, a steroid - Question - Page 41: 1

Answer

Sterols are found in the plasma membranes of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.

Work Step by Step

1. Sterols are a subgroup of steroids. 2. Sterols are differentiated from steroids by the attachment of a hydroxyl group to one of the carbon rings. 3. Sterols occur naturally in the plasma membranes of the cells of animals, bacteria, fungi, and plants. 4. Their role is to keep the fatty acid chains separate, and thus stop these chains from clumping together and hardening the plasma membrane at low temperatures.
