Chapter 1 - Figure 1.6 - Parasitology: the study of protozoa and parasitic worms - Question - Page 14: 1

Answer

Vitamin K has two main vitamers, or functional forms of a vitamin, vitamin K_{1} and vitamin K_{2}. Some bacteria in animal gut (including humans) are beneficial by converting vitamin K_{1}, the "plant form", to vitamin K_{2}, the "animal form". Vitamin K is stored in animals as vitamin K_{2}.

Work Step by Step

Although animals can utilize the plant form of vitamin K, it is stored in the body as vitamin K_{2}. The microbes which convert vitamin K in the gut allow us to store vitamin k easier.
