Chapter 47 - Musculoskeletal Systems - 47.3 - Muscles and Skeletal Systems Work Together - 47.3 Recap - Learning Outcomes - Page 1019: 2

Answer

Bones are essentially a system of levels being moved around by muscles. Because of this, the length of the muscles that are attached to the bones form a system that can either exert more force over a short distance or is better suited for translating force into large or fast movements. For example, the smaller muscles that control the jaw allows it to exert much force in a very limited distance. However, the relatively huge muscles that connect to the knee allow the leg to propel itself quickly.
