Hybrid RNAs have been used by scientists to develop methods for blocking the expression of certain genes. An organism can be transformed to produce mRNAs that are complementary to specific endogenous mRNAs, thus allowing the two strands to bind. Cells can also be injected with artificial complementary sequences, called antisense RNA since it binds via base pairing to the “sense” bases on the mRNA.
