Chapter 2 - Section 2.1 - From Atoms to Molecules - Check Your Progress - Page 25: 1

Answer

A carbon atom has six protons in its nucleus. The nucleus also contains neutrons; however, the number of neutrons present in the nucleus depends on what isotope of carbon we are referring to. In orbitals surrounding the nucleus of the atom, we find electrons. In a neutral carbon atom, there are six electrons, the same as the number of protons.
