Sometimes having extra copies of certain chromosomes is fatal or detrimental to the development of the embryo; in these cases, the pregnancies are spontaneously aborted by the mother's body. Extra copies of certain chromosomes such as chromosome 21 is better tolerated during embryonic development. Many individuals with an extra copy of chromosome 21, a condition called trisomy 21, survive into adulthood.
