A transmission electron microscope reveals the inner details of cells and organelles such as mitochondria and chloroplasts. A scanning electron microscope only shows the details of the surface of an object. A bacterium can be as small as 0.2 micrometers and can barely be seen by a light microscope; a chloroplast, which is much smaller than a cell whose diameter is between 1 and 100 micrometers, would be too small to have its inner structure revealed by a light microscope.
