Answer

c.

Work Step by Step

Menstruation comes about due to a drop in estrogen levels, so it seems that because of a drop in the woman's estrogen levels, the lining of the woman's uterus would shed, regardless if there was a fertilized egg or embryo present or not. Therefore, if the woman were to keep her pregnancy by preventing menstruation, her estrogen levels would need to rise. The hormone that stimulates the production of estrogen is luteinizing hormone. If the woman were to be treated with luteinizing hormone, her pregnancy might be saved because the lining containing the implanted embryo would not be shed.
