When blood is first pumped out of the heart, it enters the arteries, which is where blood pressure is the highest. By the time blood reaches the veins, the blood pressure is close to zero. The velocity of blood is highest in the arteries because of the pumping action of the heart to thrust blood forcefully from the ventricles into the arteries. Blood flow is lowest in the capillaries, but increases as blood enters the veins.
