Natural selection acts on the diversity present in a population. The drug 3TC killed off most of the HIV viruses; however, there were some remaining viruses that were naturally immune to the drug in this original population of HIV. When the other non-resistant viruses were killed off by the drug, the resistant ones were able to multiply and replace the original population.
