RNA nucleotides, in their modified form, contain three phosphate groups. For example, the adenine nucleotide is ATP when in its modified form. When it participates in transcription it will break off one phosphate group and energy will be released when the bond breaks. This energy supplies the energy needed for transcription. Each nucleotide works in the same way (ATP, UTP, CTP, GTP)
