A lichen consists of a mutually beneficial relationship between cyanobacteria and a sac fungus. The cyanobacteria provide the fungus with food and fixed nitrogen. Fungal hyphae hold the cyanobacteria in place. The fungus provides the cyanobacteria with protection from the elements and with other nutrients needed by the cyanobacteria.
