The HIV contains RNA as its genetic material. This makes HIV a retrovirus. HIV's genetic material is contained within a single strand of RNA. Within the host cell, the RNA gets converted into DNA, and this DNA is used to make viral proteins that can be assembled to make more copies of the virus. The new viruses are then released into the environment to infect more cells.
