There are two G phases, or gaps, in the cell cycle; they both occur during interphase. These gaps are the G1 and G2 stages. When cells are going about their normal daily activities, they are in the G1 stage. When the cell is about to undergo mitosis, it enters into the S stage, which is when the DNA is replicated. In G2, proteins are made that are essential to the process of mitosis.
