Thyroxine is produced by the thyroid glands. This hormone causes cells found throughout the body to increase their metabolism. These cells increase their activity, utilize greater amounts of energy, and generate more heat. Too much thyroxine cause hyperthyroidism; not enough thyroxine causes hypothyroidism.
