Chapter 33, Circulatory and Respiratory Systems - Assessment - 33.1 The Circulatory System - Understand Key Concepts/Think Critically - Page 972: 4

Answer

The pulmonary circuit pumps blood through the pulmonary arteries to the lungs, where oxygen-poor blood picks up oxygen and carbon dioxide diffuses out of the blood. The blood is now rich in oxygen and travels back to the heart. In the systemic circuit, oxygen-rich blood coming from the pulmonary circuit of the lungs travels to all parts of the body. The oxygen from the blood diffuses into the cells of the body and carbon dioxide gets picked up by the blood. This blood that is now depleted of oxygen travels back to the heart to be pumped back to the lungs to pick up more oxygen.
