Bacteria are infected by a type of virus called a bacteriophage. These bacteriophages latch onto the cell wall of bacteria and inject their genetic material into the bacteria. Once the genetic material is inside a bacterium, it takes over the bacterium's machinery and starts making new viruses from the instructions found in the bacteriophage's genes.
