Chapter 6 - Metabolism: Energy and Enzymes - Engage - Thinking Scientifically - Page 113: 4

Answer

Knowledge of the structure of the active site of an enzyme would be useful in drug manufacture. If a drug could be formulated to fit the active site of an enzyme used in catalysis of a specific metabolic pathway, the drug could then facilitate the chemical reaction that results from that pathway. For example, if an enzyme can be used to catalyze a reaction that results in apoptosis (cell death) of a cancer cell, a drug that could induce the action of that enzyme would be helpful in treating that cancer.

Work Step by Step

Enzymes help to increase the rate of reaction. An enyzme that can enable a drug to kill cancer cells would help treat cancer.
