Chapter 53 - Ecosystems and Global Ecology - Review - Case Study - Page 1138: 15

Answer

The positive feedback loops in the model in response to abiotic factors that affect the Amazonia forests will ultimately destroy these forests. The burning of fossil fuels and deforestation will increase the air temperature. As a result of increased air temperature, droughts and forest fires will be very frequent, which will destroy these forests and convert them into grasslands.

Work Step by Step

The burning of fossil fuels mainly contributes to increase the atmospheric CO2 (carbon dioxide). The elevated levels of CO2 will cause the increase in temperature of the Earth and will cause excessive evaporation from the plants and the soil. The dry plants in the forests are more likely to catch fire. As a result of drought and forest fires, the forests will get destroyed. Once the forests are removed by burning and deforestation, grasslands will take over that piece of land.
