Chapter 51 - Population Ecology - Review - Page 1091: 9

Answer

The older population may results in the decrease of the population growth and reproduction, which would, in turn, result in the decrease of the harvesting population size.

Work Step by Step

The presence of many older individuals compare to the younger ones may decline the population rate as the mortality rate will be high. This leads to a sharp decline in the population size. Also, the reproduction rate will be very low. Few old individuals may result in an increase of the availability of the food sources to the younger population. Further, it has been mentioned that the long-lived species are slow to mature, thus, the decline in the older species would result in the obstruction to the offspring production. The survivorship and the fecundity are improved and the overall growth and success rate also increase.
