Chapter 5 - Review Questions - Page 128: 14

Answer

Dinoflagellate taxa, when they reproduce in abundance(bloom) produce a 'red tide'. A red tide is produced when high level of toxic substances are released into the saline water body during the abundant reproduction leading to the discoloration of water. The water can turn red, yellow or brown and is highly poisonous to the fishes and other marine lives. This is also harmful to human beings if they come into contact with the red tide or ingest seafoods prepared from the poisoned fishes which can lead to poisoning in humans. Shellfish poisoning particularly is very common and hence, shellfish industries face huge economic losses when a red tide happens.
