Biodiversity in the young Hawaiian islands was low due to their isolation. This was highly advantageous to introduced species that could exploit the extremely specialized adaptations of the species there.
Biodiversity in the expanding cattle egret range, however, is very high. Introduced species have already tested and altered the adaptive landscape of the region. The cattle egret must continue to do what it already does best in order to compete and survive, with little opportunity for dramatic adaptations as is seen in the silversword.
