Cuvier's ideas could be tested in part: the idea that extinctions are followed by immigration of organisms from outside that area. However, there is not enough time to completely test his ideas about occasional catastrophes and immigration, as opposed to evolution. Lamarck's idea about the inheritance of acquired characters could be tested and shown to be false. Thus, both are scientific hypotheses.
