Chapter 2 - The Chemical Level of Organization - Checkpoint - Page 38: 11

Answer

Reduction reactions are reactions in which an organic compound loses an oxygen or gains a hydrogen. In oxidation reactions organic compounds lose a hydrogen or gain an oxygen. In some reactions both oxidation and reduction take place at the same time- substances are being reduced and oxidized simultaneously.Redox reactions are important because they make energy available for carrying out the physiological processes of the body . Thus when glucose is oxidized in cells it is catabolized to give six molecules of carbon dioxide six molecules of water and ATP in which enery is stored for cellular use

Work Step by Step

Redox reactions coprise simultaneoue chemical reduction and activatio. . As some substances are being reduced some are being oxidized.. In reduction reactions substances ( atoms, molecules, ions). Reduced compounds lose oxygen or gain hydrogen; they gain electrons and suffer a decrease in oxidation state. and gains energy. Organic compounds that gain oxygen or lose hydrogen are said to be oxidized. In oxidation reactions the relevant molecular species suffers a loss of electrons and experience a increase in oxidation state. The catabolism of glucose in which a molecule of glucose is oxidized to give six molecules of water and six of carbon dioxide also produces ATP which stores the energy necessary for cellular respiration .6CO2 + 6H2O rarrow.gif (63 bytes) C6H12O6 + 6O2(g).
