The elbow is distal to the shoulder because the former is farther from the head qnd frpoint of attachment of the limb.om the attachment. The right and left shoulders are contralateral to each other because they are on opposite sides of the saggital or middle axis of the body. "Contra" is prefix that means opposite or against, and "lateral" is from a root means side.or to the side. The sternum is medial to the humerus because the sternum is in the mid-sggital plane of the body and the humerus is the ling bone of the arm which down at the side of the body. The heart which is in the upper part of the thoracic cavity is superior to the the diaphragm which forms the floor of the thoracic cavity.
