Robert Hooke was a great scientist and inventor. He invented a vastly improved compound microscope which enabled him to discover and name cells. He did microscopic examination of insects, and plant and animal tissues. He wrote a great book on microscopy, with the title" Micrographia" This was the first comprehensive book on microscopy; it was published in 1665.

Anton Van Leeuwenhoek was a contemporary of Robert Hooke. He invented microscopes with lens that had superior resolution to those used in Hooke's microscopes. With his microscopes he was able to see blood cells, capillaries, sperms and bacteria.
Hooke and Leeuwenhoek made invaluable contributions to microscopy and established the observational evidence for the cell theory.
