Chapter 7 - The Nervous System - Review Questions - Page 302: 23

Answer

The brain is protected from external damage by bones that make up the skull. The brain is covered by several layers of membranes, and cerebrospinal fluid is present in tissues surrounding the brain. These membranes and cerebrospinal fluid together act as a cushion and prevents the brain from colliding with the skull. The brain also contains a barrier made of several minimally permeable capillaries that prevent toxins and harmful substances from entering into the brain.
