Chapter 2 - Basic Chemistry - Review Questions - Page 86: 15

Answer

Lead and Gold are different elements that have different number of protons and neutrons in their nuclei. Basic chemical reactions can only alter the electrons surrounding the nucleus, and they cannot change any part of the nuclei. Only nuclear reactions can change the contents of nuclei, which requires very high energy. Hence conversion of lead to gold was not possible in ancient times.
