Chapter 3 - Linear and Quadratic Functions - 3.2 Building Linear Models from Data - 3.2 Assess Your Understanding - Page 134: 11

Answer

(a) Refer to the picture below. (b) Using the points $(3, 4)$ and $(9, 16$,the equation is $y=2x-2$ (c) Refer to the attached picture in the solution box. (d) Refer to the attached picture in the solution box. (e) Refer to the attached picture in the solution box.

Work Step by Step

(a) Plot each of the given ordered pairs on the same coordinate plane. Refer to the attached picture below. (b) At point $(3,4)$ and $(9,16)$, the equation of the line is: $y-y_1=m(x-x_1)$ $y-4=\frac{16-4}{9-3}(x-3)$ $y-4=2(x-3)$ $y=2x-2$ (c) Using the same set of ordered pairs in (a), connect the points $(3, 4)$ and $(9, 16)$ using a line. Refer to the attached picture below. (d) The results in (c) shows that the lie of best fit is actually the line $y=2x-2$, which is the same graph as in part (c). (e) The results in (c) shows that the lie of best fit is actually the line $y=2x-2$, which is the same graph as in part (c).
