Chapter 7 - Measurement - 7.1 Problem Solving with U.S. Measurement Units - 7.1 Exercises - Page 487: 59

Answer

a.) 1056 second b.) 17.6 minutes

Work Step by Step

Given, Tropical cockroaches are the fastest land insects. They can run about 5 feet per second. To find how long it would take the cockroach to travel one mile, First we need to find the how many seconds it will take to travel one mile. As we know 1 mile = 5280 feet, so divide 5280 with 5. 5280/5 = 1056 second Therefore Tropical cockroaches will take 1056 second to travel one mile. b.) We need to calculate the time in minutes i.e. 1056 sec= min You are converting from a smaller unit to a larger unit (a second is smaller than a minute) so divide. Because 1 min = 60 seconds, divide by 60 1056/60 = 176/10 = 17.6 min Therefore Tropical cockroaches will take 17.6 minutes to travel one mile.
