The distributive property allows us to distribute anything multiplied by something inside of the parenthesis to whatever is inside of the parenthesis. Thus, we distribute the -5 to everything inside of the first set of parenthesis and the -6 to everything inside of the second set of parenthesis, giving us the equation: $8-10x-5=2-6x+18$ We now simplify: $-10x+3=-6x+20 \\\\ 3=4x+20 \\\\ -17=4x \\\\ x=-17/4$
