Chapter 4 - Writing Linear Functions - 4.4 - Scatter Plots and Lines of Fit - Exercises - Page 199: 8

Answer

(a) 0.600 (b) 5. (c) decreases.

Work Step by Step

Earned run average is plotted on the x-axis and winning percentage on the y-axis. (a) When we draw a horizontal line from the point that has an x-value of 4.2, it crosses the y-axis at 0.600. So, the winning percentage of the pitcher with an earned run average of 4.2 is 0.600. (b) When we draw a vertical line from the point that has a y-value of 0.33, it crosses the x-axis at 5. So, the earned run average of the pitcher with a winning percentage of 0.33 is 5. (c) As the plotted points go bottom from left to right, the winning percentage decreases as the earned run average increases.
