Chapter 2 - Solving Equations - 2-4 Solving Equations with Variables on Both Sides - Practice and Problem-Solving Exercises - Page 106: 19

Answer

$22$ feet

Work Step by Step

The first side of the wall has a storage of $7$ feet plus $5$ equal lengths for plants. Make x equal to the length of each plant. The equation of the length would be: $7 +5x$ The second side has a storage of $4$ feet plus $6$ equal lengths for the plants. The equation of the length would be: $4 +6x$ Set both equations equal. $7 + 5x = 4 +6x$ Subtract $5x$ from each side. $7 = 4+6x-5x$ $7 = 4+x$ Subtract $4$ from both sides to get : $3 = x$ If $x = 3$, we can plug this in to find the storage length. Lets plug it into equation 1: $(7 +5x)$ $7 + (5\times3) = 22$ feet
