Chapter 3 - Solving Inequalities - 3-1 Inequalities and Their Graphs - Lesson Check - Page 167: 5

Answer

We plug the number in for the variable in the inequality.

Work Step by Step

When we plug a number in for the variable, we are able to simplify the inequality so that the only thing that is on either side of the inequality symbol is a number. If the inequality is true, the number is a solution, but if the inequality is not true (for instance, $3 \gt 4$ is not true), then the number is not a solution to the inequality.
