How is Lula Ann different from her parents?
Lula Ann is much darker skinned than her parents. Sweetness points out that her whole family as far back as she knows was light skinned. Her grandmother, in fact, was light enough to pass for white. She says this in order to underscore that the darkness of Lula Ann’s skin could not have come from her side of the family.
