Should We All Just Get Along?: Shteyngart's Exploration of the Pros and Cons of Societal Unity 11th Grade

The political climate in the United States today generated as a result of the 2016 election is extremely polarized, contentious, and has led many to lose all hope in American democracy. In Gary Shteyngart's dystopian novel, Super Sad True Love Story, he presents the omnipotence of the hardline Bipartisan party and the attitudes that surround it in order to make a critique about attitudes surrounding politics today. The story begins with two unlikely lovers, Eunice Park and Lenny Ambravof, meeting for the first time at a house party in Rome and spending the rest of the night together. Once Lenny moves back to New York, he finds it hard to re-adjust to life in America because the government has been taken over by the infamous Secretary of Defense Rubenstein and has trouble connecting with his old American friends Noah Greenberg, a popular social media streamer, and Vishnu Cohen-Clark who works in the tech industry. Eventually after only communicating with her family over the social networking site GlobalTeens, Eunice joins Lenny in New York because she feels guilty for deserting her newly politically active sister at home.
