Lissa Tarsis
The older sister of the protagonist. Commonly referred to as "Lis", the narrator mistakes herself for her older sister, realizing that it is just her except with a massive growth spurt.
Jonah Tarsis
The protagonist's twin brother, he is not present in the beginning of the book as the protagonist's family seems to have disappeared.
Fiona Tarsis
She is the protagonist of the story. She wakes up in a different time arising from a deep sleep. She has no clue what is going on around her and wakes up in a completely changed world. She also carries the odd tattoo on her right hand and is a target of branding. Her problems begin when she send up on the wrong side of the wall.
Jacqui
A former classmate that takes Fiona in after finding her stranded on the streets. With Fiona covering up the mark, she does not notice she is branded. She encouraged Fiona to chop off her hair.
Arrin
The girl who helps Fiona while she is on the other side of the wall. She provided resources to Fiona so that she can survive and be protected. Arrin is not aware that Fiona is branded.
