State of Fear Summary

"State of Fear" is written by Michael Crichton and published in the year 2004. It is a science fiction thriller. The book is known for its influential political critic towards global problems such as global warming, whereas the academic community criticized it for being pseudoscientific.

The story starts with the protagonist, Peter Evans. He is the personal lawyer of a philanthropist George Mortan. Evan manages all significant contributions made to a fictional environmentalist institution called the National Environmental Research Fund. One day, Evan realizes that the data aren't meeting their target, and he suspects it's directors. Later on, women named John Kenner, and Sanjong Thapa arrive for an office visit and talk about research work at MIT. Where Evan sees they are officers of the law enforcement agency, who are working for an international non-governmental organization to track down a group of an eco-terrorist named as ELF.

On the other hand, ELF is conspiring to create a fake disaster. They try to convince the world that global warming is threatening and uncertain. They plan an attack on the world with a topical climate conference that NERF is sponsoring. Through this, they try to extract more funds. Kenner and Thapa tell Evan about ELF member's cruelty that they cross every limit to get more donations.

Later on, With Kenner and Thapa, as well as Morton's assistant Sarah Jones and Evan travels the globe to different fabricated disasters before ELF starts killing innocent people. They ruined the ELF's plan of destroying the California beach, where they confront with crocodiles and tribes that practice cannibalism. Before tribes kill the protagonist of the story, Morton comes and saves. After it, Evan's group clashes with the highly trained ELF terrorists on the tropical island. In the fight, Haynes almost dies. The story ends up unleashing a strong backwash that drowns the stranded ELF members.

In last, Evan, Jones, and Morton return to Los Angeles and start the work again with a more positive approach. The book's ethical values are against those who misuse their power. The narrator tries to present a true of global media image and organization running under big names only to earn profits and have nothing to do with natural calamities.
