Martin Luther King Jr.
In the United States, Martin Luther King Jr. was the most visible and prominent spokesman for the American Civil Rights Movement, which sought to give African Americans in the United States more power and rights. Inspired by Gandhi, King and his followers were the man largely responsible for making the United States a less racist place.
Freddie Gray
It was the murder of Freddie Gray by the hands of the Baltimore police which inspired a deeper conversation about race in the United States. His death was also yet another example of a black man who was murdered by the police, something which this book says is becoming an epidemic.
His death also inspired protesting and rioting in Baltimore, which also brought race issues and issues of police brutality into the foreground.
