Spring Moon Themes

The role of tradition in times of paradigm shifts

What is the purpose of Spring Moon's upbringing into her traditional identity, just to have that all challenged and changed by the changing political climate of China? This question is at the center of much of Spring Moon's adventures and social involvement.

The role of a person in terms of family and honor

Spring Moon has to consider the ancient ancestors of her family, and the honor system that kept such a powerful culture together for thousands of years. She has to make decisions for herself, but also for the sake of her clan and the clan of her husband.

The role of independence and the threat of independence against established tradition

When various characters become convinced by arguments from Christianity, or from the new Chinese Communism that was sweeping across China, the effect is absolute chaos. In established, traditional cultures, philosophical independence is like poison. Before long, everyone will go to their own independent worldview, leaving the traditions and folklore of thousands of years behind them. The threat is very real.

Political schism

Another theme that is consistent in the plot is the problem of polar political views, and the open-mindedness of the progressive family members, in conflict with the traditional mores (moh-rays) of the conservative family members. This political divide causes real splits in the families of the story.
