Narrator
Not much information is provided about the speaker. In fact, there is not enough data to determine gender, nationality, or much in the way of basic tastes or preferences. All that can be gleaned for sure is that the speaker loves the outdoors, is observant, philosophical and probably in love with the companion out there on winter morning in the woods.
The Companion
Only the narrator’s specific and explicit mention of “you and I” gives in any indication that there are two people here. And even then, the “you” could possibly—though not very likely—be less than human or even purely metaphorical. The reason that is not likely is the later observation by the speaker that “We may touch, love, explain.” A definite sense of tactile connection with another human being is at the very least implicitly implicated here. As for any description of who this other person might be or what they look like, those details, too, are “Placed in a puzzling light.”
