Slumdog Millionaire Irony

Jamal is going to be blinded (Dramatic Irony)

At Maman's camp, Maman is blinding children in hopes that once that are rendered more helpless they will fetch more money as beggers. After witnessing a boy get blinded by Maman, Salim is sent to fetch Jamal so that he too can be blinded. As Jamal is brought before the gangsters, he has no idea that the plan is to anesthetize and blind him, which creates dramatic irony between what we know of his fate and what he knows. Luckily, Salim helps him to escape this horrible fate, and they run away.

Jamal the tour guide (Situational & Dramatic Irony)

When Salim and Jamal arrive at the Taj Mahal, they have no idea where they are. This is ironic in and of itself, because they are two Indian boys who do not even recognize one of the most famous landmarks in their country, a landmark which thousands of tourists travel to see. The second bit of irony comes when Jamal sits down for a moment beneath the sign for tours, and two German tourists mistake him for a tour guide. Instead of telling them the truth, Jamal plays along and gives them a completely improvised, fictional tour of the famous palace. The dramatic irony comes from the fact that while we know Jamal has no idea what he is talking about, the Germans listen to him intently, as though he were an expert tour guide, which results in one of the most comic scenes in the film.

Jamal sneaking into Javed's house (Dramatic Irony)

Intent on finding Latika as a young adult, Jamal follows Salim to the housing complex of Javed Khan, the gangster. He manages to sneak into the house by telling the guard that he is a dishwasher, and finds Latika inside. In the middle of their conversation, Javed Khan arrives home and has no idea who Jamal is, thinking that he is a cook, rather than an old friend of Latika's. The dramatic irony comes from the fact that the viewer knows that if Javed knew that Jamal was trying to help Latika escape, he would become incredibly angry, but he has no idea.

Latika has Salim's phone (Dramatic Irony)

Jamal does not know the answer to the final pivotal question on the game show, and must use his final lifeline, "Phone a Friend." The only phone number he knows is Salim's, but what he does not know is that Salim has helped Latika escape from Javed Khan's clutches and given her his phone in the process. As the phone rings, Jamal expects that perhaps Salim will pick up the phone, but he has no idea that his beloved Latika is running towards the car to get it before it stops ringing. The fact that we can see Latika rushing to get the phone in time creates an instance of dramatic irony and heightens the suspense.
