Thomas Strange
Thomas is the son of Arthur and Honoria and brother to Lucy. After their parent's death, Thomas and his sister go to London to live with Uncle Brady Neville.
Lucy Strange
Lucy is Thomas' sister and daughter to Arthur and Honoria. She is the mother of Ellen Newton. While on her voyage to India, she gets intimate with Captain William and later gets pregnant. After arriving in India, she lives with Isaac Newton and names her newborn daughter after him. After returning to London, Lucy is diagnosed with a strange disease and told that she could not live long. She did photography as she awaited her death.
Honoria Strange
Honoria is Arthur’s wife and mother to Thomas and Lucy.
Arthur Strange
Arthur Strange is the husband to Honoria and father to Thomas and Lucy. He is a coach driver.
Neville Brady
Neville Brady is Thomas and Lucy’s uncle living in London. After the death of Arthur and Honoria, Neville takes Thomas and Lucy to live with him in London. Later, Neville loses his job and later dies.
James Strange
Mrs. O’Connor is a blind neighbor to Thomas and Lucy’s in their first home.
Isaac Newton
Isaac Newton lives in India, and Neville owes him money. Neville cannot pay his debt and decides to send Lucy to India and live with Newton as a payment. However, Newton falls in love with Lucy, but their romance is short-lived.
Captain William Crowley
Captain William Crowley is the biological father of Ellen Newton. He impregnated Lucy while on her six-month voyage to meet Isaac Newton.
Bashanti
Bashanti is one of Newton's enslaved men. Bashanti is the one who takes Lucy around to explore India and experience new places.
Asok
Asok is one of Newton's enslaved men, and he is the one who informs Newton that Lucy is pregnant.
Victor Browne
Victor Browne is a photographer, and he agrees to teach Lucy photography while in India.
