Who was Simon the Cyrenian?

Simon the Cyrenian, the titular character of the poem, is mentioned in the Bible. In the Bible, he was forced by the Romans to carry Jesus' cross as Jesus was taken to his crucifixion. This act is represented by the fifth or seventh of the stations of the cross. As it says in the Bible: "And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross." However, Simon also played another critical role in the Bible: he is the father of disciples Rufus and Alexander, both of whom influenced the events in the holy text.

In what way does the story of Simon the Cyrenian relate to modern-day racism?

In Roman times, Black people were treated as less than other people. In the poem, Simon (the narrator), mentions that they only wanted him to carry Jesus' cross for his crucifixion because he is Black. He is described as a "meek" man because of the circumstances he found himself in. However, Simon played an integral role in history, even though he was oppressed by people. In this case, Simon played an integral role in the death of Jesus Christ.

Why could Jesus never speak a word to Simon, but call for him?

In a rather interesting twist, Cullen mentions that Jesus never speaks "a word" to Simon, but Simon nevertheless hears Jesus' call. Jesus was well-known for his mystical qualities and his ability to influence and attract people, sometimes unexpected people.
