    Why does Agnes get drunk so soon after moving into the new flat, despite promising Shuggie that she was going to try to quit? Or, if it is unclear why she does this, why do you think the author leaves it unclear?

    Students might note the general shift in tone, both in the narration (which is mostly from Shuggie’s point of view now) and in the way Shuggie speaks to Agnes (less patient, more willing to express anger).
