    Discuss how Faulkner's characterization of Jubal conforms to racist stereotypes. Why do you think he portrays Jubal this way? Is he simply agreeing with these stereotypes or criticizing them?

    The characterization of Jubal is racist to the point of caricature. He is described at the beginning of the story as "a creature a little larger than a large monkey," and the monkey comparison appears again at different points in the story. Jubal's dialogue is written in an exaggerated dialect that emphasizes his immaturity and lack of intelligence, for example calling "Contalmaison" "Countymaison." Jubal is helpless when presented with alcohol, and his lack of self-control leads...
