Shadowshaper Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Shadowshaper

The title of the novel symbolizes the identity of Sierra and her people. Their heritage shines brightly throughout the novel as they showcase themselves as a formidable force.

The Tower

The Tower is the building right across Manny’s junkyard. It is a symbol of gentrification. This is a way to forcibly remove a low-class community from an area to develop it for high-class accommodation. Wick hiding in the tower and spying on the shadowshapers is a form of cultural heist. His intention is to steal their powers for himself.

Dragon

Sierra paints a dragon mural at the request of Manny. While painting the mural, she is unaware of her powerful abilities. The dragon is an allegory to her hidden powers manifesting as the dragon comes alive.

Dr. Wick

Wick symbolizes an outsider whose mission is to infiltrate the shadowshapers and implement his rule. His plans are destructive and puts Brooklyn at risk.
