Ronin

Also "drifter" or "wanderer," this means a samurai without a lord or master

Samurai

Samurai were the military nobility of Japan, and were not only warriors but held an important, high position in the caste system

Profilmic

This describes things which happen in front of the camera, as opposed to behind or within the camera.

Epitome

Something (or someone) that is the perfect example of a particular type or quality.

Kinetic

relating to or resulting from motion.

Consummate

As used in this guide, it means to make a relationship complete by having sexual intercourse (referring to Katsushiro and Shino).

Sengoku period

A period in Japanese history marked by social upheaval and military conflict, between 1467 and 1603

Magistrate

A civilian officer who administers the law

Repression

subduing someone or something by force

Bushido

A term for the codes of honor that dictated a samurai's way of life

Hierarchy

In this case a social system in which members are ranked according to relative status and authority

Implicit

Suggested but not directly expressed

Censor

An official who examines art and news to be published or released, and suppresses any part that they consider obscene or unacceptable (often due to politics)

Morality

Principles concerning the distinction between right and wrong

Supersede

to take the place of someone or thing that previously held a high position (of authority or of use)

Millet

Small seeded grasses, in this case it refers to barley

Disciples

Disciples are those that follow, learn from, and often carry on the message of a teacher or master. When Katsushiro says he wants to be Kambei's disciple, he means he wants to follow him and learn from him, and then take his lessons as a samurai out into the world.

Transcend

To transcend is to rise above or go beyond something.

Plight

A difficult or otherwise unfortunate situation

Telephoto lens

A lens with a longer focal length, which gives a narrowed field of view and a magnified image.
